Background facts for the development of ISO 45001:2018 OH&S Management System Standard
It is estimated that over 2.78 million people die each year from a work-related illness or injury. In addition to this there are thousands of life-changing industrial diseases and industries suffered by workers on daily basis.
An organization's activities can affect people (workers, management, visitors, neighbours etc), as such the occupational health and safety of the people is the primary responsibility of the organization. It is the responsibility of the organization to promote and protect the health (physical and mental) of the people.
An organization can be able to provide safe and healthy workplaces to its workers, prevent work-related injuries and ill health by adopting and implementing an occupational health and safety management systems standard, such as ISO 45001:2018 that will also continually improve occupational health and safety performance of the organization.
ISO 45001:2018 OH&S standard has been developed by experts from 69 countries in liaison with representatives from key international organizations, such as ILO (International Labour Organization), ITUC (International Trades Unions Confederation), IOE (International Organization of Employers).
The success of UK led OH&S 18001 standard and many other national standards / documents has pave the way for the development of ISO 45001:2018, the global OH&S standard. With the publication of ISO 45001:2018 standard, British Standards Institution (BSI) has withdrawn BS OHSAS 18001:2007 standard. ISO 45001:2018 OH&S standard now supersedes BS OHSAS 18001:2007 standard and it is the first global occupational health and safety management systems standard.
